Wolfenstein: The New Order, najnowsza seria kultowych strzelanek studia Machine Games i Bethesdy, zadebiutowała w maju 2014 roku, wielu z was zdążyła więc zapewne już o niej zapomnieć. Tymczasem świetny, pierwszoosobowy shooter wzbogaci się niebawem o samodzielny prequel fabularny, zatytułowany Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

Po raz kolejny przyjdzie nam się więc wcielić w amerykańskiego komandosa z polskimi korzeniami, B.J. Blazkowicza. Tym razem jednak przyjdzie nam wykonać dwuczęściową misję w Bawarii, w 1946 roku.

Część pierwsza, Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves, pozwoli nam stawić czoła "maniakalnemu strażnikowi więziennemu" podczas próby włamania się Blazkowicza do zamku Wolfenstein. Naszym celem będzie kradzież dokumentów Generała Trupiej Główki.

Część druga, zatytułowana The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs, zastanie nas w mieście Wulfburg, do którego udamy się wraz z Blazkowiczem w poszukiwaniu wspomnianych wyżej dokumentów. W Wulfburgu spotkamy nazistowskich archeologów, prowadzących wykopaliska w celu odnalezienia tajemniczych artefaktów, które mają posłużyć do uwolnienia mrocznej i potężnej mocy...

Notatka historyczna

W 1790 roku trzej handlarze tytoniem ze Strasbourga: bracia Nicolas i Augustin Jacobi oraz Joseph Fabry wykupili wytwórnię oleju w Sarreguemines, położoną na lewym brzegu Saary, w której uruchomili manufakturę ceramiki. Produkowali wyroby z mieszaniny gliny, krzemionki i wapienia.

W roku 1799, bawarczyk - Paul Utzschneider, odkupił od Augustina Jacobi część jego udziałów w firmie. Już rok później J. Fabry i P. Utzschneider odkupili pozostałe udziały i zmienili nazwę firmy na Fabry, Utzschneider et Cie.

Dzięki pomysłowości i wiedzy Paula Utzschneidera firma wyrosła na największego producenta płytek fajansowych w Europie. W 1812 roku zatrudniała 160 pracowników i miała 7 czynnych pieców opalanych drewnem. W tym czasie podejmuje także produkcję wyrobów z polerowanego gresu, imitujących pochodzące ze znanej angielskiej wytwórni Wedgwood, a w 1828 r. zastosowano pierwsze dekoracje drukowane z miedziorytów.

W roku 1836 zarządzanie fabryką objął zięć Paula Utzschneidera – baron Alexandre de Geiger. Fabryka zatrudniała wówczas 300 pracowników, posiadała 3 młyny, a 7 pieców opalanych było węglem. Praca i twórczość Paula Utzschneidera przyniosła mu w 1819 roku Legię Honorową oraz wiele nagród na wystawach krajowych i regionalnych. Zmarł 9 września 1844 roku w Neunkirch-Les-Sarreguemines w wieku 73 lat.

Aby rozbudować i zmodernizować przedsiębiorstwo, Alexandre de Geiger łączy siły z dwoma innymi sąsiednimi rodzinami ceramików: Villeroy z Vaudrevange oraz Boch z Mettlach. 11 lipca 1838 roku powstała nowa spółka: Utzschneider et Cie. Pod jego kierownictwem produkcja w trzech nowych (powstałych w latach 1858-1969) fabrykach osiągnęła wymiar przemysłowy, dzięki wykorzystaniu nowoczesnych technologii i rozwijaniu nowych produktów: fajansu typu "opaque" (nieprzejrzysty) oraz zdobieniu w procesie drukowania z płyt uzyskanych technikami galwanicznymi, które są tańsze i pozwalają na produkcję identycznych wyrobów w bardzo dużych ilościach. A. de Geiger nie zaniedbał także wyrobów luksusowych. Od 1855 roku produkował porcelanę już na skalę przemysłową, szczególnie po odkupieniu fabryki Fismes w 1862 r. i Dubois / Limoges w 1867. Około 1870 roku, aż do pierwszej wojny światowej flagową produkcją fabryki w Sarreguemines były wytwarzane w dużych ilościach wyroby z majoliki.

Syn Alexandra de Geigera - Paul de Geiger urodził się 15 czerwca 1837 roku w Sarreguemines. Studiował w Sarreguemines i Metz. W 1859 roku prowadził zakład nr 2. W 1864 został dyrektorem technicznym 3 fabryk na lewym brzegu Saary, a w 1867 dyrektorem generalnym.

W 1871 roku, w wyniku traktatu zawartego we Franfurcie, Lotaryngia została przyłączona do Niemiec. Alexander de Geiger opuścił Sarreguemines i udał się do Paryża, gdzie uruchomił oddział firmy, a Paul de Geiger objął zarządzanie całym przedsiębiorstwem.

W 1876 roku P. de Geiger wybudował nową fabrykę w Digoin (produkcja rozpoczęła się w 1877 r.), a w 1881 nowy magazyn w Vitry-le-François, do którego towary dostarczane były koleją lub drogą wodną. Następnie, po przeładowaniu, trafiały stąd do odbiorców francuskich. Od 1899 roku była tu fabryka wyrobów sanitarnych i fajansu.

40-letnia germanizacja firmy, nałożona po aneksji przez Niemcy, doprowadziła do podziału spółki 13 czerwca 1913 roku na dwie części: niemiecką La Société Utzschneider et Compagnie oraz francuską spółkę publiczną Les Etablissements céramiques Digoin, Vitry-le-François et Paris. Krótko po podziale firmy, Paul de Geiger zmarł w Sarreguemines 30 października 1913 roku.

Po pierwszej wojnie światowej obie firmy zostają znów połączone w jedno przedsiębiorstwo (z siedzibą główną w Paryżu), zarządzane przez rodzinę Cazal do drugiej wojny światowej. Po wybuchu wojny w 1939 roku, produkcja fabryk w Sarreguemines została wstrzymana, a pracownicy ewakuowani do Digoin. Pod koniec 1940 roku zakład nr 4 w Sarreguemines został ponownie uruchomiony (jako niemiecka masa upadłościowa), a w latach 1942-1945 zarządzany przez firmę Villeroy & Boch.

Kiedy 11 grudnia 1944 r. miasto zostało wyzwolone fabryki były w ruinie. Prace konserwatorskie rozpoczęto niemal natychmiast. Stopniowo, stare piece zostały zastąpione przez piece tunelowe, budynki, warsztaty, koleje, kanały, drogi i mosty zostały naprawione lub przebudowane. Wybudowano nową elektrociepłownię i budynek produkcji płytek. W 1955 roku firma z Sarreguemines zajęła właściwe jej miejsce wśród największych eksporterów fajansu.

W 1979 roku przedsiębiorstwo zostało przejęte przez grupę Lunéville-Badonviller-St. Clément i zaprzestano produkcji naczyń, a w 1982. zmieniło nazwę na Sarreguemines bâtiment. W fabryce Vitry-le-François produkowano ceramikę sanitarną, a w Digoin naczynia dla gastronomii.

W 2002 roku 19 pracowników i menadźerów objęło akcje fabryki i przyjęło plan naprawczy. Firma przyjęła nazwę Céramiques de Sarreguemines. W 2005 roku spółka została postawiona w stan likwidacji, a 9 stycznia 2007 roku została zlikwidowana.

Créée en 1790 par Joseph Fabry, Nicolas Jacoby et Paul-Augustin Jacoby, la faïencerie de Sarreguemines a vu le jour dans un petit moulin à huile en plein coeur de la ville de Sarreguemines. Malheureusement, l'entreprise commence assez rapidement à avoir des soucis financiers.

Dix ans plus tard, Nicolas Jacoby, décide de revendre ses parts à Joseph Fabry mais surtout à l'allemand Paul Utzschneider. Paul Utzschneider changeât la méthode de fabrication de la faïence française en prenant exemple sur le modèle Anglais. C'est le début de la renommée de la faïence de Sarreguemines.

Les prix remportés lors de diverses expositions et la commande de pièces en grès de l'Empereur Napoléon en 1812 ont fait de cette faïencerie une des plus grandes de France .

En 1836, Paul Utzschneider quitta la tête de l'entreprise qui fût aussitôt reprise par Alexandre de Geiger qui effectua une "fusion" avec Villeroy & Boch ( grande faïencerie Allemande ). La faïencerie de Sarreguemines s'agrandit grâce aux aides financières de son partenaire. Trois nouveaux sites de fabrication voient le jours entre 1836 et 1869. La faïencerie devient l'une des plus grande d'Europe.

En 1871, suite au traité de Frankfurt, la Lorraine devient Allemande. Alexandre de Geiger quitta Sarreguemines pour ouvrir des succursales à Paris ( Digoin en 1877 et Vitry en 1881 ) et y fabriquer les services de tables et les objets de décoration en "Majolique". Paul son fils reprend la direction de l'usine de Sarreguemines.

Début 1900, l'entreprise compte environ 3000 ouvriers. A la mort de Paul de Geiger ( 1913 ) , l'entreprise se divise en deux établissements. L'une regroupe les entreprises basées en Allemagne et l'autre celles basées en France nommé SDV ( Sarreguemines - Digoin - Vitry-le-François ) et dirigées par la famille Cazal.

Durant la seconde guerre mondiale, l'entreprise française devient Allemande ( 1942 ) sous la direction de Villeroy & Boch. A la fin de la guerre, la Lorraine redevient Française, l'entreprise, en 1945, le redevient naturellement.

En 1979, la manufacture SDV est rachetée par le groupe Lunéville-Badonviller-St Clément. C'est la fin de la production de vaisselles à Sarreguemines pour faire place à la fabrication de carrelage.

Aujourd'hui et ceux depuis 1982, la société se nomme Sarreguemines Bâtiment.

La faïence fût découverte au Moyen et Proche-Orient puis dans toute l'Afrique du Nord. Elle arriva en Europe en commençant par l'Espagne, ensuite l'Italie pour enfin arriver en France au XVIIème siècle.

L' Angleterre invente la Faïence fine et la fait mondialement connaître au XVIIIème siècle...

La faïence est fabriquée à partir d'argile. Elle est de couleur blanche et opaque. On la trouve généralement recouverte de glaçure ( en étain ) à cause de sa porosité, ce n'est pas le cas pour la porcelaine fabriquée à partir du gré .

La cuisson de la faïence se fait de 900° à environ 1400°C. Elle est fabriquée de 3 manières dîtes :

Une pré cuisson à 900°C nommée "dégourdir" précède la pose du décor ( oxyde métallique ), suivi d'une cuisson définitive à 1400°C environ. C'est la manière la plus courante utilisée pour fabriquer la faïence de Sarreguemines

Même principe que le grand feu mais avec des températures moindres et une durée de cuisson plus importante. Principalement utilisée pour les décors polychromes de la faïence de Sarreguemines

Cette technique Anglaise appliquée sur la faïence fine de Sarreguemines, est recouverte d'un verni plombifère transparent.

Epoque : fin XIXe début XXe siècle

Infos : Le charme des « Terre de fer » ( Carmen, Favori, Flore, etc…) réside essentiellement dans leur iconographie incontournable de motifs naturalistes empruntés à la flore et à la faune. Les décors se répètent sur toutes les pièces d'un même service, une seule, ou bien plusieurs illustrations pouvant cohabiter dans le même modèle. Ainsi assiettes, plats, raviers, saladiers, saucières et soupières se parent de libellules, de papillons, de fleurs, de mésanges assises sur une branche ou bien prenant leur envol. Deux à cinq dessins se déclinent autour d’un même thème d’une pièce à l’autre, alors que la frise sur le marli reste identique. La palette des couleur est large : bleu gris, bleu de cobalt, bleu de Prusse, mauve, rouge, pourpre ou vieux rose, vert cendré, ocre brun, terre de sienne foncé...

Etat : très bon ; belle faïence crème clair, vernis brillant, camaïeu rouge intense, ni tache, ni cheveu, ni fêlure. A signaler uniquement des traces d’usage (griffures du vernis par les couverts) et quelques micro-égrenures au verso

At the time of the French defeat of 1871 the German-speaking parts of the département of Meurthe and of the département of Moselle were merged to build one of the three districts of the Elsass-Lothringia Reichsland, the district (German: 'Bezirk') of Lothringen with capital Metz and the eight counties (German: 'Kreise') Bolchen, Chateau-Salins, Diedenhofen, Forbach, Metz-Stadt, Metz-Land, Saarburg and Saargemünd. The remaining French-speaking parts of the départements of Meurthe and of Moselle were linked together and became what is still the present département of Meurthe-et-Moselle.

[1] : Nicolas-Henri Jacobi (1790 until 1800)

Production started in 1790 when Nicolas-Henri Jacobi together with two other partners set up the first factory despite the unfavourable economic climate. Jacobi then bought an oil mill by the river and transformed it into a stone-grinding mill. However, much more than his strong determination was needed and in 1794, Jacobi took over the molds and left-over material from the facility in Ottweiler a.d. Saar as they had stopped producing porcelain around 1770 shortly after being taken over by René François Jolly and Nikolas Leclerc in 1769. Still the difficulties in obtaining supplies of raw materials as well as the hostility and suspicion of local inhabitants remained. In addition to the competition from the large amount of English and French manufacturers, the upheaval caused by the Revolution finally forced Jacobi to give up.

[2] : Porzellanfabrik Utzschneider & Cie. (1800 until 1919)

The dynamic Bavarian Paul Utzschneider took over the factory in 1800 and introduced new decorating techniques. Napoleon I became one of his best customers and ordered several pieces and the business expanded so much that it had to open new workshops and acquire several mills. The protests provoked by the consequences of deforestation induced the company to use coal instead of wood, but it was not until 1830 that the first coal-fired kilns were built. In 1836 Paul Utzschneider finally handed over the management of the factory to his son-in-law Alexandre de Geiger who erected new buildings that were in harmony with the landscape; the 'Moulin de la Blies' mill was built in 1841 in this spirit. In 1838 Alexandre de Geiger associated himself with 'Villeroy & Boch' and this agreement contributed to the growth of production. The industrial revolution was in full swing, and a new architecture emerged with the appearance of saw-tooth roofs and round chimney stacks tall enough to prevent smoke from drifting over neighbouring houses. The new factories built in 1853 and 1860 completely relied on steam-powered machinery and in the workshops, modernization centred mainly on the energy needed to operate the machines.

Following the annexation of the Moselle to Germany, Alexandre de Geiger left Sarreguemines and retired in Paris in 1871. His son Paul de Geiger took over the management and two new factories were constructed at Digoin and Vitry-le-François. Paul de Geiger died in 1913, the year in which 'Utzschneider & Cie.' was split into two companies, one responsible for the establishment in Sarreguemines and the other for the French factories.

[3] : Sarreguemines - Digoin - Vitry-le-François (1919 until 1982)

After the First World War the factories were united under the name of 'Sarreguemines - Digoin - Vitry-le-François' and run by the Cazal family. During the World War II, the faience factories were sequestered and their management entrusted to 'Villeroy & Boch' between 1942 and 1945. After stopping production of porcelain and majolica, the company was taken over in 1979 by the 'Lunéville - Badonviller - Saint Clément' group.

[4] : Sarreguemines - Bâtiment (1982 until ...)

In 1982 the company was renamed to 'Sarreguemines - Bâtiment' and it became the main sponsor of the Sarreguemines museum which has access to the company archives; the company notes that all inquiries regarding old items should be sent to the museum. They mostly refer to museum publications which on first glance appear nicely priced but make sure to get a correct handling fee quotation before you order.

Mark Comments:

Note that the marks listed here are incomplete and not really sorted; there are many more to be found online. Some sites claim the Lorraine coat of arms over 'MADE IN GERMANY' mark was used until 1922, which is incorrect - simply because the area became French territory after the first World War. The original French version of the booklet from the Sarreguemines museum states that the mark itself was indeed used until 1922 but without the 'MADE IN GERMANY' addition.

Jego nazwisko było długo ignorowane, ale jego praca są znane na całym świecie dzięki niezwykłej popularności naczyń dekoracyjnych, fason "Obernai", w ramach którego uwiecznił  zwyczaje, tradycje i życie codzienne Alzacji. Wiele restauracji lub winiarni obsługuje klientów na talerzach, na których dnie  można odkryć wieś, dom, i piękne dziewczyny w tradycyjnych alzackich strojach. W oknach sklepów z pamiątkami, Strasburga znajdziecie Państwo stoisko z fajansem z dekoracjami wykonanymi przez Henri Loux.

Młody talent ...

Ten wybitny artysta, urodzony w Auenheim 20 lutego 1873, jest synem Henry Edward Loux nauczyciela , który osiadł w 1875 roku w Sessenheim.

W 1884 roku, po ukończeniu nauczania przez ojca, młody Henry i jego brat udali się do  protestanckiej szkoły Gymnasium "John Sturm" w Strasburgu. Najstarszy brat jest pilnym uczniem, ale najmłodszy, Henryk, jest raczej słaby, z wyjątkiem jednego przedmiotu: rysunku! Jest utalentowany od wczesnej młodości; docenia wszystko co beztroskie na łąkach i polach, uwielbia  podziwiać piękno otaczającej przyrody.

Zachęcony przez swojego nauczyciela sztuki, Edouarda Weisandt Henri Loux chce poświęcić się sztuce i staje się artystą. Jego ojciec jest przeciwny, ale potem pozwala  na zajęcia wieczorne w rysunku, a na końcu cieszy się, że syn został wpisany jako student Szkoły Rzemiosł (Kunsthandwerkschule) później Szkoła decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule) w Strasburgu. Na inauguracji nowego budynku w 1892 roku, młody Loux   za pracę żniwa otrzymał pochwałę , a w swojej klasie  zapisany jest jako prymus.

Pod koniec października 1893 roku przeniósł się do Monachium, "Akademie der Kunst Bildenden" gdzie był jednym z najlepszych studentów. Posiadał niezwykły talent do dekoracyjnego malowania. Dwóch wybitnych malarzy niemieckich artystów, Ludwig Richter i Moritz Von Schwind, miało na niego wpływ. Pierwszy, były profesor rysunku w szkole dekoracja fabryki porcelany w Miśni, wprowadził go w ilustrowane historie i legendy germańskiego folkloru, drugi jest projektantem Sublime "Wartburg".

W 1897 roku, po ukończeniu studiów, Henri Loux wrócił do Alzacji, ze stopniem  "Kunstmaler" (malarz).Początkujący malarz staje się wielkim podróżnikiem. Podróżuje po Alzacji z północy na południe, ze wschodu na zachód. Wszędzie, szkicuje zieleń,  cuda przyrody w  poruszający sposób: sceny z życia wsi, ludzi i ich stroje, domy szachulcowe. Jest to przede wszystkim związane z wioskami i okolicami znanymi z dzieciństwa: cała jego praca to zachwyacający  hymn do krainy młodości.

Główne dzieło inspirowane Alzacją

Napływało coraz więcej zleceń,: wykonał pełne humoru ilustracje do  przewodnika po Strasburgu w 1898, stworzył świetny plakat do prezentacji wodewilu Goethego "Die Fischerin" i ilustracje na okładce książki poetyckiej "s'Pfiffel VUM e Meiselocker." On stworzył okładkę (używany do 1918 roku) z almanachu Rolnictwa i wino a winiety są odtwarzane do 1939 roku.

Podczas Wystawy Powszechnej w Paryżu w roku 1900, stoisko z Alzacji było bardzo wiernym odwzorowaniem domu Kamerzell Strasburgu. Zaprojektował je  Henri Loux na zlecenie  Leo Boll, dyrektora gazety Alzacji i Lotaryngii, stworzył także duży plakat do promowania tego stanowiska, a także  ilustracje do broszury "Wino i Coteaux d'Alsace", który był dystrybuowany dla gości Wystawy.

Wielka sławe przyniosła mu jednak ilustracja fajansu Sarreguemines  "Obernai"

Najbardziej znaną pracą Henri Loux jest zestaw naczyń "obernai". Stworzył 56 postaci  powielanych na różnych naczyniach wykonanych w słynnej fabryce fajansu i majoliki Faienceries Sarreguemines – te ilustracje stały się częścia tradycji alzackiej i jako takie produkowane są po dziś dzień przez Lunéville- St Clement.

Sarreguemines Fajans, Utzschneider i Co, od zawsze szukała wybitnych artystów, którzy mogą tworzyć nowe projekty do dekoracji naczyń.

W 1902 roku, ich aktualny artysta Karola Spindler dekorator katedry św Leonarda, stwierdził, że jest zbyt zajęty, i przekazał zlecenie do Gustave Stoskopf, który sam zaproponował jego wykonanie Henriemu  Loux. Jego szkice zostały przyjęte. Po czym  udał się do Loux Sarreguemines, gdzie przebywał w pracowni fabryki przez kilka miesięcy. Pierwsze obiekty: dzbanki, talerze dekoracyjne, naczynia pojawiły się w 1903 roku pod nazwą "Loux" . Karczmarz z Obernai, kiedy zobaczył talerze-  chciał nabyć stół pełną zastawę do swojej karczmy dekorowaną malarstwem H. Loux Artysta został wezwany do fabryki, aby wykonac to dodatkowe zamówienie i wtedy fason przyjął nazwę  "Obernai"

Po wykonaniu zlecenia Henri Loux  wrócił  do Strasburga-Neudorf, i skupił się na pracy. Ale niestety tu czaiła się śmierć… Został hospitalizowany w 1906 roku, wierzył, że wyzdrowieje - miał jeszcze wiele planów do zrealizowania ... Niestety! Rankiem 19 stycznia 1907, wyzionął ducha.

Miesiąc po jego śmierci, jego przyjaciele zorganizowali retrospektywną wystawę w Strasburgu, a później pojawił się "Loux-Maps", zestaw 30 reprodukcji dzieł lub dzieł artysty, który odniosły wielki sukces

W 1991 roku, miasto Auenheim obok domu artysty wzniosło wspaniałą kolumnę. W 1986 roku, została opublikowana przez wydawnictwo "Editions  Swarm", książka poświęcona życiu i twórczości Henri Loux. Autorami są dr Paul-André Befort i Fernand Gastebois.

At the time of the French defeat of 1871 the German-speaking parts of the département of Meurthe and of the département of Moselle were merged to build one of the three districts of the Elsass-Lothringia Reichsland, the district (German: 'Bezirk') of Lothringen with capital Metz and the eight counties (German: 'Kreise') Bolchen, Chateau-Salins, Diedenhofen, Forbach, Metz-Stadt, Metz-Land, Saarburg and Saargemünd. The remaining French-speaking parts of the départements of Meurthe and of Moselle were linked together and became what is still the present département of Meurthe-et-Moselle.

[1] : Nicolas-Henri Jacobi (1790 until 1800)

Production started in 1790 when Nicolas-Henri Jacobi together with two other partners set up the first factory despite the unfavourable economic climate. Jacobi then bought an oil mill by the river and transformed it into a stone-grinding mill. However, much more than his strong determination was needed and in 1794, Jacobi took over the molds and left-over material from the facility in Ottweiler a.d. Saar as they had stopped producing porcelain around 1770 shortly after being taken over by René François Jolly and Nikolas Leclerc in 1769. Still the difficulties in obtaining supplies of raw materials as well as the hostility and suspicion of local inhabitants remained. In addition to the competition from the large amount of English and French manufacturers, the upheaval caused by the Revolution finally forced Jacobi to give up.

[2] : Porzellanfabrik Utzschneider & Cie. (1800 until 1919)

The dynamic Bavarian Paul Utzschneider took over the factory in 1800 and introduced new decorating techniques. Napoleon I became one of his best customers and ordered several pieces and the business expanded so much that it had to open new workshops and acquire several mills. The protests provoked by the consequences of deforestation induced the company to use coal instead of wood, but it was not until 1830 that the first coal-fired kilns were built. In 1836 Paul Utzschneider finally handed over the management of the factory to his son-in-law Alexandre de Geiger who erected new buildings that were in harmony with the landscape; the 'Moulin de la Blies' mill was built in 1841 in this spirit. In 1838 Alexandre de Geiger associated himself with 'Villeroy & Boch' and this agreement contributed to the growth of production. The industrial revolution was in full swing, and a new architecture emerged with the appearance of saw-tooth roofs and round chimney stacks tall enough to prevent smoke from drifting over neighbouring houses. The new factories built in 1853 and 1860 completely relied on steam-powered machinery and in the workshops, modernization centred mainly on the energy needed to operate the machines.

Following the annexation of the Moselle to Germany, Alexandre de Geiger left Sarreguemines and retired in Paris in 1871. His son Paul de Geiger took over the management and two new factories were constructed at Digoin and Vitry-le-François. Paul de Geiger died in 1913, the year in which 'Utzschneider & Cie.' was split into two companies, one responsible for the establishment in Sarreguemines and the other for the French factories.

[3] : Sarreguemines - Digoin - Vitry-le-François (1919 until 1982)

After the First World War the factories were united under the name of 'Sarreguemines - Digoin - Vitry-le-François' and run by the Cazal family. During the World War II, the faience factories were sequestered and their management entrusted to 'Villeroy & Boch' between 1942 and 1945. After stopping production of porcelain and majolica, the company was taken over in 1979 by the 'Lunéville - Badonviller - Saint Clément' group.

[4] : Sarreguemines - Bâtiment (1982 until ...)

In 1982 the company was renamed to 'Sarreguemines - Bâtiment' and it became the main sponsor of the Sarreguemines museum which has access to the company archives; the company notes that all inquiries regarding old items should be sent to the museum. They mostly refer to museum publications which on first glance appear nicely priced but make sure to get a correct handling fee quotation before you order.

Wedgwood has been an international company for over two centuries. Founded in 1759 upon the highest standards to uphold these essential factors in maintaining its leading position throughout the markets of the world.

The founder, Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), who is remembered as ‘the Father of English Potters', was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, in the heart of the English potteries. He served his apprenticeship as a potter before setting up his own business in 1759.

By 1766 he had prospered sufficiently to build a new factory, which he named Etruria. Josiah was to sow the first seeds of the innovative spirit, which continues to be an integral part of Wedgwood. During his lifetime he invented and produced what remain today three of Wedgwood's most famous ceramic bodies - Queen's Ware (1762), Black Basalt (1768) and finally Jasper (1774).

In the nineteenth century, important progress was made at the Wedgwood factory in the use of new machinery, the introduction of the first coloured earthenware bodies and, most importantly, the manufacture of bone china. Wedgwood bone china tableware was to grace the tables of many illustrious homes throughout the world, including the dinner service which President Theodore Roosevelt ordered for the White House.

During the 1930's, Wedgwood's success continued and in order to increase efficiency, the fifth Josiah Wedgwood decided to build a new factory. A country estate near the village of Barlaston was purchased and a new, modern factory was built. Production started in the 1940's and has continued at the site ever since. Here, Wedgwood continues its living tradition of progress in design, in production methods and in the skills of its many craftspeople. In 2000, a modern visitor centre was added to the complex to cater for the huge interest Wedgwood.
